Terrazzo

We cast terrazzo in situ, restore old terrazzo floors and make terrazzo stairs and tiles. The mix of aggregate and binder is chosen from samples before work begins.

Cast in-situ terrazzo

Cast terrazzo is made on site: divider and movement strips are set on the prepared substrate, the mix of aggregate and binder is placed, and once cured it is ground and polished. The result is a floor without joints between tiles, suited to large areas in public and commercial buildings. The binder, colour and grain are chosen from samples. Before casting, the layout of strips and movement joints is matched to the structure.

Materials and formats
Marble and other stone aggregates, pigmented cement binder, brass, aluminium or PVC divider strips, sealers.

Grinding, polishing and sealing terrazzo

Terrazzo is ground in several passes, from coarse to fine grits, until the aggregate is exposed and the agreed sheen is reached. Pores and small defects are filled between passes, and the surface is sealed at the end. A floor finished this way is easier to maintain and keeps its look in high-traffic areas. The level of sheen, from matt to high gloss, is agreed on a test area.

Materials and formats
Diamond grinding tools, pore fillers, sealers and protective coatings.

Restoring old terrazzo

Old terrazzo in stairwells, schools and residential buildings is often just neglected: grinding, filling and polishing bring its look back. Cracks and damaged areas are repaired with a mix matched to the existing aggregate and colour. Where edges or parts of steps are missing, we reprofile them. Before restoration we show on a small area how the floor will look once finished.

Materials and formats
Repair mixes matched to the existing terrazzo, fillers, grinding tools, sealers.

Terrazzo stairs, thresholds and precast tiles

Terrazzo stairs are cast on site or built from precast elements, with anti-slip inserts at the nosing of each tread. Thresholds and precast terrazzo tiles are matched to the floor in colour and grain. Precast tiles are laid and then ground, so the joints are flush. In building renovations we also make replacement elements for damaged steps.

Materials and formats
Cast terrazzo and precast elements, anti-slip inserts, adhesives and mortars for installation.

Mix design and samples

The look of terrazzo is set by the aggregate, the colour of the binder and the grain size. Before casting we make samples in several combinations, so the client or architect chooses the mix from real material rather than a picture. The chosen sample becomes the reference for the work and its quality control. A mix can also be matched to existing terrazzo in the building.

Materials and formats
Marble, granite and glass aggregates, pigments, cement binders; samples on request.

  2. Quote with a bill of quantities

We send a quote with items, quantities and a schedule, so you can compare it line by line.

  3. Execution

We work to the agreed plan, with substrate preparation and waterproofing where they are needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is cast terrazzo?

A floor made on site from a mix of stone aggregate and binder, ground and polished once it has cured. Unlike tiles, it has no joints between elements, apart from divider strips and movement joints.

Terrazzo or "teraco": is it the same?

Yes. "Teraco" is the colloquial Croatian name for terrazzo; both mean the same material and the same kind of floor.

Can old terrazzo be restored instead of replaced?

In most cases, yes. Grinding, crack repair, filling and polishing bring the floor back into good condition; we assess the scope on a site visit.

How long does terrazzo take?

It depends on the area, the curing time and the number of grinding passes. The indicative schedule is in the quote, after the site visit and survey.

How is a terrazzo floor maintained?

By regular cleaning with neutral products and renewing the sealer according to traffic. Acidic and abrasive cleaners damage the surface and should be avoided.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. Our work carries a 2-year guarantee. It does not exclude or limit your statutory rights in respect of defects.
